We believe that pursuing the CAD route with our apprentices and forming this partnership with Concurrent Engineering has ensured that our young engineers will be ably equipped for the future

Background

At KMF, our award-winning apprenticeship scheme places apprentices on a detailed rotation schedule, spending time in each manufacturing department to develop a clear view of the necessary skills required to become a modern sheet metal engineer.
Just over 18 months ago, KMF approached PTC with the objective of building a partnership which would allow KMF’s apprentices to access Creo Parametric modelling throughout their four-year engineering apprenticeship.

Solution

After contacting Luke Evans from Concurrent Engineering with our enquiry, we received detailed information about the CREO package and spend time reviewing our options with Luke and third parties before reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

The partnership has allowed our apprentices the opportunity to learn Creo modelling throughout the duration of their apprenticeship, therefore enhancing the quality of our training standard.

In-house design teams at KMF utilise Creo software to model a full range of sub-contracted metal parts/components and this exciting partnership means that our apprentices are now able to learn 3D modelling within the classroom environment and can, “hit the ground running” when their time in the design department comes around.

Results

Since investing in CREO access for our engineering apprentices, the ability and confidence displayed by our young people has grown immensely.

As part of KMF’s Productivity Share Scheme, an employee initiative to facilitate continuous improvement and cost savings within current operations, apprentices have been able to use to CREO to sketch, 3D Model and finally manufacture products such as cupboards, waste bins, racks, notice boards and tool racking, to enhance manufacturing efficiency.

The complete CREO package helps our Young Engineers to develop their drawing skills, understand which processes are most suitable and determine any design faults and material requirements.
To top this package off, Concurrent Engineering provides an excellent helpdesk service. In the few times we have called on the services of the HELPDESK department, the service has been nothing short of exemplary. Polite, speedy, efficient, and nothing is too much trouble! I would like give my sincere thanks for their exemplary work ethic.

All in all, we believe that pursuing the CAD route with our apprentices and forming this partnership with Concurrent Engineering has ensured that our young engineers will be ably equipped with the skills they need to progress and our business needs for the future.
